Crossed Words

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the New York Times crossword puzzle.  Here at Says You! we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to highlight this milestone, especially as we took to the road for a visit to Indiana University. Will Shortz, crossed words with his academic colleagues and instituted his own novel major at Indiana University – yes, a degree in the study of puzzles will make you an academic enigmatologist. Listen in this week to our show from Indiana as we pay tribute to Will Shortz and to all lovers crosswords in a new round of celebrity voice overs.

Notice something familiar in the Sunday New York Times puzzle on August 2, 2015? It’s the clue for 15 down in the “Literally Speaking” crossword constructed by Matt Ginsberg: “___You!” Yes, that’s us.

Playing the Ponies

We are off to the races with Dr. Stuart Mushlin, Jeopardy Champion and guest panelist on Says You! from time to time over the years – and did we mention Stuart is Francine Achbar’s husband? Dr. Mushlin knows his stuff – long time Medical Director at Boston’s Brigham and Women and educator at Harvard. Recently he put pen to paper and it’s time to celebrate the release of new book Playing the Ponies and Other Medical Mysteries Solved.

This Monday, March 6, “On Point” is featuring Stuart for a full hour interview at 11AM on WBUR in Boston, WUSF 89.7 in Sarasota and other NPR stations around the country.  Monday’s show is hosted by Jane Clayson.
Listen live or stream it on your computer. Or hear the podcast later at www.wbur.org/onpoint/ways-to-listen.

Screen Saver

So what do writing staff really do on their summer vacations? Says You! writer Nat Segaloff has just released a memoir about the celebrities he has worked with as movie publicist, critic, and producer. What it reveals about them and the inside workings of the entertainment industry will keep you turning the pages. But don’t take our word for it – actually, please do take our word for it! Screen Saver: Private Stories of Public Hollywood is available now in hardcover, paperback, e-book, and Kindle from Bear Manor Media and Amazon.

Wit for Brits

We moved to Wales UK and purchased the app to keep in touch with the show which we love. But no new shows have been posted since we bought it. What’s up? We are getting frantic.

Cheers, Robin Glover.
Sent from a benevolent iPad

Robin,

So glad to hear from you – and hope you are loving your new experience! You should know that one of the biggest inspirations for the show was the British show “My Word” – and in all the years of hearing from media companies that we should “dumb down” the show – it was the notion of “My Word” that kept us steadfast. The only little secret we can share is that in the My Word “shaggy dog stories” (which were brilliant) the panelists were given a week or more to craft their response. Nothing, absolutely nothing, on Says You! is rehearsed or shared ahead of time with the panelists.

So, back to the app – we take a summer hiatus – as such, there are no new shows currently, but the new shows will begin again in late September following the NPR calendar. Again, thank you for reaching out – most of all, thank you for listening! Stay in touch.

‘Dancing with the Stars’ of Says You!

This season opens with Tom Bergeron, host of Dancing with the Stars and America’s Funniest Home Videos.  Tom joins the cast of Says You! in San Bernardino – reuniting with good friends and with lots of laughs.  Our hosts, Rick Dulock and Lillian Vasquez of KVCR, arranged for us to perform on the stage where Bob Hope once entertained.  What a pleasure to play our brand of Says You! in a beautiful cypress-beamed auditorium with immense historical significance.  The entire cast of Says You! says, “Thanks for the memory” and welcome to a new season.

What’s New with Cast and Crew?

Our panelists have been busy, busy, busy! Check out everything they’ve been up to:

Arnie Reisman is still blushing from the success of War Paint, the musical adapted from his documentary The Powder and The Glory.  Its premier run in Chicago was extended into late August this summer and with a wave of a mascara wand, is now headed to Broadway.  Based on Lindy Woodhead’s eponymous book, War Paint is the story of the rivalry between the cosmetic entrepreneurs Elizabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein. Check out the War Paint Musical website for more!

Murray Horwitz has been moonlighting…in addition to sitting sixth seat on Says You! As the new host of The Big Broadcast he now brings radio listeners back in time to shows such as Gunsmoke, The Jack Benny Show, and Dragnet, placing them in the context of their era. The Big Broadcast is produced and recorded in Washington DC and is WAMU 88.5’s longest-running program, featuring a collection of vintage radio programs from the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s. The show airs Sundays from 7 until 11 p.m. and has been a weekly feature on WAMU 88.5 since 1964.

Announcing a great broadcast honor for the “broad” in our “cast.”  Paula Lyons has been selected for induction into the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in recognition of her work as a consumer reporter for WCVB-TV, “Good Morning America” and WBZ-TV.

Following Dave Zobel‘s seven year stint as a writer for public radio’s The Loh Down on Science, Dave joined Says You! last year as co-script writer alongside Nat Segaloff. As we say here at Says You!, “Genius don’t cost extra” — Dave is a science humorist and active alum of Caltech. For much of 2016, Dave was on book tour for the release of The Science of TV’s The Big Bang Theory – presenting at a number of Maker Faire events and the 2016 Annual Gathering of American Mensa (MensaCon). Dave’s book has been translated into German, Russian, and Chinese. TV’s immensely popular comedic sitcom, “The Big Bang Theory,” does raise legitimate scientific concepts. Dave’s book capitalizes on the show’s popularity with American families and explores much of the sophisticated science introduced by Sheldon and the quirky cast. But the genius is, Dave makes science intriguing and accessible to middle schoolers and scholars alike. A great family read in any language.
